The settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict requires the political will of not only Azerbaijan but also Russia. The statement came from President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko.
He said this in an interview with «Izvestia in Ukraine», commenting on the question of how Belarus would contribute to the solution of conflicts in trouble spots as the chair country of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).
«I am distant from Transnistria, from what is happening in Georgia, Abkhazia, Ossetia, but once I was driven into this problem. Once I was invited by my friends to the mountains, they showed the mountains to me and I raised the subject with the purely Belarusian approach.
As for Nagorno-Karabakh, there is no normal life there. I think this problem should be solved. I spoke to one president, then to another. I explained that such a situation cannot last long. Armenians have agreed with me, I talked to Ilham Aliyev and he said he does not mind. Although I hate the role of a mediator. I offered this role to Ukraine, but they did not want to”, said the head of state, but did not specify exactly who did not agree for Ukrainian mediation.
In his view, this conflict must be settled together by Russia and Azerbaijan provided that there is a political will.
«And the Minsk Group of the powerful ones can act as a guarantor,» Alexander Lukashenko said.
